Learning Guitar Online: A Journey from Skepticism to Embracing Digital Learning

As an “old school” guitar teacher, I was initially hesitant about teaching guitar online. For years, I believed that while video lessons could be created, they wouldn’t truly benefit the student. After all, there’s no direct feedback from someone watching a video—you simply don’t know if they understand what you’re teaching.

But a few years ago, somewhere in 2012 I began considering the idea of offering online guitar courses, influenced by the growing trend of digital learning in our teaching and training systems.

A Change in Perspective

What a surprise it was! After nearly three decades of teaching guitar in person, I found myself needing to completely rethink my teaching methods. The challenge was to ensure that my instructions were clear, the course was well-structured, and the student felt engaged and adequately exercised.

I had to anticipate potential problems students might face during the course and answer as many questions as possible—while maintaining the course’s pace and upholding all the academic standards of the material.

The Technical Journey

And then there was the technical side of things: video shooting, sound quality, editing, design—it took me years to learn, test, and experiment with these skills. There were moments of great enthusiasm, as well as deep disappointments and sleepless nights. But I kept going until my first course began to take shape. Now, it’s finally online, with two more courses currently in the editing phase and many more in various stages of development.

A New Way of Teaching and Learning

This has become one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever undertaken, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. It’s an enriching process for both the student and the teacher. Online learning opens up new possibilities for teaching methods that would be difficult or impossible to implement in a traditional one-on-one format.
